On 10 February 2026, a bipartisan Modern Slavery Bill was introduced in the New Zealand Parliament. The cross-party nature of the billm the first of its kind to invoke Standing Order 288, suggests a strong appetite for modern slavery reform in New Zealand.

The Bill is not yet law but is expected to move through select committee review and public submissions during 2026. Once passed, it would require large organisations operating in New Zealand to disclose modern slavery risks and their responses. Current proposals suggest a threshold of NZD 100 million in consolidated annual revenue in any givern reporting period, with both New Zealand entities and overseas companies supplying into New Zealand potentially captured.
For Australian groups with New Zealand operations, that is a second reporting obligation on top of existing Australian Modern Slavery Act requirements.
